Professional Background and Interests.

I have a B. A. in Sociology and Mathematics from the University of Kansas (1961) and both an M. A. (1963) and PhD.(1966) in Sociology from Stanford University.

I taught at the University of Maryland, College Park beginning in 1971, first as Associate Professor and then as Full Professor. I have been Professor Emerita since 2003. At the University of Maryland I was the Sociology Department’s Director of Graduate Studies 1973‑77 and 1980‑82, and the Undergraduate Honors director 2000- 2002. Before coming to Maryland, I taught at the University of California, Irvine and the University of Washington (in Seattle) and worked as a Staff Associate at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Within sociology, my areas of specialization are Social Psychology (Small Group Processes, Social Exchange, and Equity); Mathematical Sociology; and Contemporary Sociological Theory.

I have been the major advisor for the following PhD students: Marilyn J. Essex, 1978; Herbert L. Zeigler, 1982; Carole L. Seyfrit, 1984; John G. Smale, Jr, 1985; Linda Garrison Zamani-Moghadam , 1989; Susan G. Queen, 1990; Mona-Rae Thompson, 1991; Alan R. Lehman, 1994; Joann DeFiore, 1995; Brenda Marsteller Kowalewski, 1995.

 My current professional memberships include: the American Sociological Association (Social Psychology Section, Theory Section,  Mathematical Sociology Section, and Rational Choice Section); and the District of Columbia Sociological Society.

My current research and writing continue in the areas of sociological social psychology and mathematical sociology.
